One of the most common questions expecting mothers ask when planning their session is what to wear for maternity photos. Pregnancy is a beautiful and meaningful stage of life, and naturally you want to look and feel your best during your maternity session.
However, many moms feel unsure about wardrobe choices. Some wonder if they need to buy special maternity gowns, while others worry about finding something flattering for their changing body. Fortunately, there are many beautiful options that photograph incredibly well.
At Sonia Gourlie Fine Art Photography, we help guide every client through wardrobe styling so the process feels easy and enjoyable. In addition, our studio offers a curated maternity wardrobe designed specifically for photography. As a result, you do not need to stress about finding the perfect outfit on your own.
This guide will walk you through the best outfit ideas, styling tips, and wardrobe options for stunning maternity portraits.

The outfit you choose can dramatically influence the final look of your maternity portraits. While your baby bump naturally becomes the focus of the images, the right wardrobe enhances the overall elegance and emotion of the photographs.
For example, flowing fabrics create beautiful movement, while fitted gowns highlight the shape of your pregnancy. In addition, carefully selected colors and textures help create timeless portraits that will still feel beautiful years from now.
Most importantly, your wardrobe should reflect your personality. Some mothers prefer soft, romantic gowns, while others love dramatic fabrics or modern bodysuits. Either way, the goal is to choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
There are many wardrobe styles that photograph beautifully during maternity sessions. Below are some of the most popular choices.
Maternity gowns remain one of the most popular options for maternity photos. Designers specifically create these gowns to highlight the baby bump while maintaining a soft and elegant look.
For example, many maternity gowns include:
Because of these features, maternity gowns comfortably fit a variety of body shapes and sizes.
In addition, chiffon, lace, and satin fabrics photograph beautifully under studio lighting. As a result, these gowns often create the classic, timeless maternity portraits many mothers love.

Robes offer another versatile and elegant wardrobe option. Unlike structured dresses, robes allow for flexible styling throughout your session.
For instance, you can wear a robe open to highlight your baby bump. Alternatively, you can wear it closed for a softer and more modest look.
Meanwhile, many clients pair robes with bodysuits or simple lingerie pieces. This combination creates a romantic, editorial style that looks stunning in maternity portraits.

Interestingly, some of the most dramatic maternity portraits use fabric rather than traditional dresses.
Many images that appear to show elaborate gowns actually feature carefully draped fabric. During the session, we wrap or style the fabric to highlight the curve of the belly and create elegant movement.
For example, fabric can be used to:
As a result, fabric styling allows us to create unique and artistic maternity portraits.

For mothers who prefer a modern or glamorous style, bodysuits can be a beautiful option. Unlike loose gowns, bodysuits create a sleek silhouette that highlights the baby bump.
For instance, popular bodysuit styles include:
Similarly, bodysuits pair beautifully with robes or flowing fabrics to create a layered look.
Accessories can elevate the styling of your maternity portraits. Although they are optional, small details often make a big difference in the final images. The right accessories can add elegance, personality, and emotion to your maternity portraits. The goal is to choose pieces that enhance your look while keeping the focus on you and your beautiful baby bump. Thoughtful details often make images feel even more personal and timeless.
Jewelry that carries sentimental value can bring a deeper story into your maternity portraits. A necklace passed down through generations, a bracelet gifted by your partner, or a small family heirloom can add a subtle emotional touch. These details photograph beautifully in close-up images, especially when your hands gently rest on your belly.
Soft, minimal necklaces pair beautifully with maternity gowns or draped fabric looks. A thin chain, small pendant, or simple initial charm adds just the right amount of elegance without overpowering the image. These pieces work particularly well with open necklines or off-shoulder gowns.
Larger earrings can beautifully frame your face and bring attention to your expressions. When styled with an updo or softly pulled-back hair, statement earrings create a polished and sophisticated look. Neutral tones such as gold, pearl, or soft metallics tend to photograph the most beautifully.
Styling Tip: Choose jewelry with a soft finish rather than overly reflective pieces. Highly polished or shiny accessories can reflect studio lighting, while matte or brushed finishes photograph more naturally.
Small styling elements around the hair and shoulders can transform the overall mood of your maternity portraits.
Hair accessories add a soft, romantic touch to maternity photos. Pearl clips, delicate combs, or floral crowns bring out a feminine and whimsical feel. These accessories work beautifully for both elegant studio sessions and outdoor maternity portraits.
Flowing layers create movement and dimension in maternity photography. Lightweight capes, tulle veils, or sheer fabrics can be draped over the shoulders, wrapped gently around the body, or allowed to flow behind you for dramatic, dreamy portraits.
here are a few more examples, many mothers choose:
In addition, these accessories add subtle sparkle and create a more luxurious feel.
Color selection plays an important role in the overall look of your maternity portraits. Therefore, it helps to consider a few factors when choosing your wardrobe.
First, think about your personal style. Some mothers love soft neutrals, while others prefer bold colors.
Second, consider your home décor. Many families display maternity portraits in their living rooms or nurseries, so coordinating colors can create a cohesive look.
Finally, consider the season or location if you plan an outdoor session.
Some of the most popular maternity photography colors include:
Overall, these soft tones create timeless portraits that will never go out of style.
Fortunately, most maternity wardrobe pieces are designed to fit a wide range of body shapes.
Designers intentionally create maternity gowns with flexible features such as stretch fabrics, adjustable ties, and open designs. As a result, these garments comfortably accommodate many different body types.
Meanwhile, fitted items like bodysuits may have more limited sizing. However, we always work closely with clients to select flattering wardrobe options for their individual body shape.
The number of outfits depends on the type of maternity session you choose and the package collection chosen .
Studio sessions offer the most flexibility for wardrobe changes. Because we photograph indoors, you can comfortably change outfits throughout the session.
For example, many clients choose a combination of:
As a result, studio sessions often create a diverse and beautiful gallery.
Outdoor sessions usually include fewer wardrobe changes. Since we bring wardrobe pieces to the location, we typically choose outfits that travel well.
In addition, weather and lighting conditions may limit the number of changes we can comfortably photograph.
Therefore, most outdoor maternity sessions include two or three wardrobe looks depending on the package chosen.

When partners or children join the session, wardrobe coordination becomes important. In these cases, we select outfits that complement one another without distracting from the baby bump. We do supply childrens outfits from size 1 to size 12 , and help paryners select wardobe from there own home closets, that coordinate with the rest of the family.
For instance, simple neutral clothing often photographs beautifully with maternity gowns.

After choosing your wardrobe, we can coordinate outfits for your partner.
Generally, partners photograph best in:
Meanwhile, it is best to avoid bright logos or busy patterns. Neutral clothing keeps the focus on the connection between family members.
A little preparation can help ensure your session runs smoothly.
Professional hair and makeup can elevate the overall look of your portraits. Because studio lighting softens makeup, slightly stronger makeup often photographs beautifully. At this time we are not providing hair and make up as our artist is on her maternity leave, but we can make some suggestions and recommend places to go.
Neutral nude coloured undergarments work best under most maternity gowns. For example, a nude strapless bra and seamless underwear usually provide the best support.
For studio sessions, shoes are rarely necessary. However, for outdoor sessions, comfortable footwear that can easily be removed is recommended.
Pregnancy is a short but meaningful chapter in your life. Therefore, maternity portraits provide a beautiful way to celebrate this moment before your baby arrives.
